Collecting sales tax

Turn on Stripe Tax for an event so tax is added to tickets and add-ons at checkout.

For Organizers

Before you start

Sales tax is off for every event until you turn it on. When it's on, Stripe Tax works out the tax at checkout and adds it on top of your listed prices.

  1. Connect Stripe to your event group.
  2. Set up Stripe Tax in your Stripe Dashboard and add a registration for each state where you collect tax.
  3. Make sure the event, or its venue, has a full street address.

Turn it on

  1. Open the event's Tickets tab.
  2. In the Sales tax card, check Collect sales tax at checkout and save.
  3. Give each ticket type and add-on a tax category: event admission, clothing, physical item, or not taxable.

Clothing is its own category because several states tax shirts and hats differently from other goods.

Where tax is charged

Tax is calculated for the venue's address, because that's where attendees get in and pick up merch. If the event moves to a new venue, the tax location updates on its own.

Filing and paying the tax

Collecting tax doesn't file it. You still file returns and pay the tax to each state where you're registered, on the schedule each state sets. Stripe Tax can file for you, you can use a filing partner, or you can file yourself using Stripe Tax reports.

Stripe charges its own fee for each taxed sale. Tidy Events doesn't take a share.

We can't give tax advice. Ask your accountant which categories and registrations fit your event.
